Hair Facts

  • On average, a hair strand's life span is five and a half years.
  • Next to bone marrow, hair is the fastest growing tissue in the human body.
  • Hair is actually dead material when it leaves its root - otherwise it would hurt very much when your hairdresser works with his scissors. Most people know that, but do you know about these facts:
  • A blonde head of hair has usually much more strands than red or dark hair heads.
  • Hair consists mainly of keratin(bonding agent for fusion extensions), which is also responsible for the elasticity of fingernails.
  • Even on a good hair day, everyone loses at least 40 to 100 strands.
  • The average scalp has 100,000 strands, or just fewer than 1000 per square inch.  On average redheads have 90,000 hairs. People with black hair have about 110,000 hairs.  Blondes have the most hair with about 120,000 hairs.
  • We are born with all our hair follicles. Some are programmed to grow pigmented hair (as on our scalp) up to 3 feet in length.
  • In America in '96, 38 million men and 19 million women experience common hair loss determined by heredity.
  • The trait for baldness can be passed down through paternal or maternal genes.
  • Hormone imbalance and crash dieting can trigger temporary hair loss.
  • On average, a man spends about five months of his life shaving.
  • In a lifetime, an average man will shave 20,000 times.
  • The reason why hair turns gray as we age is because the pigment cells in the hair follicle start to die, which is responsible for producing "melanin" which gives the hair color.
  • The big toe is the foot reflexology pressure point for the head.
  • Female hair grows more slowly than male hair.
  • Humidity stretches the hair.
  • Hair grows faster in warm weather.
  • Cutting hair does not influence its growth.

So, I have a lot of my clients asking, "where to get hair".  It's simple, while there are a ton of places in San Diego County, there is just one place that I recommend, It's The Beauty Supply Warehouse.  The one that I go to is located on the corner of University and 30th Street in North Park.  I go to this one because the staff is very helpful.  Also, the good thing about this store is that they accept refunds or exchanges for up to seven days.  So if for any reason you need to take your hair back, whether it's the wrong color, length, or type, NO PROBLEM, as long it is still new and unopened.  A lot of beauty supply stores will not let you take hair back, un-opened or not, so this is definitely a plus.  Also I do full consultations for ($25) and will go to the store with you to give you all the ins and out of extension hair so that you can make an educated decision about your hair and what will work best for you.  So check them out!!!!

Extensions - Good Hair, Bad Hair - What's The Difference?

Introduction

So you want to get Hair Extensions but you've heard the horror stories and you're petrified that you'll end up bald, ugly and a lot poorer when it's all over? Well, if you don't do your homework then of course this could happen. But there's a way to have beautiful hair using Hair Extensions without damaging your own hair, and in fact allowing your natural hair to grow longer and healthier in the process.

Hair comes in many qualities and apart from the method of application, the quality of your hair extension hair will determine whether or not they will look real, and how long they will last.

Bad Hair - Anything Synthetic(free flowing)

Do not use this hair for a free flowing style, you will regret it later.  Unless you want to look like you've got a shredded plastic bag stuck to your head avoid it at all times. Synthetic Hair is basically plastic and will NEVER look like you grew it (unless you are 12 inches tall and your name is Barbie). Synthetic hair is however, the best hair for your braided base for sewn in extensions.  It is used to prevent stress on your hair and provide you with a stronger base so that breakage does nor occur.

Good Hair - European Hair

This hair mostly comes from southern Italy and Spain and usually is grown very dark. Some of it is naturally straight, some naturally wavy. European Hair is what most people use for Extensions. It is durable and looks good and it will last up to a year if cared for properly.

All of the Human Hair above starts off very dark then has it's color stripped back to nothing and then it is re-tinted to all the shades available. This means that if you want platinum blonde hair it has gone through a massive chemical process to get to that color.

The Best Hair - Raw/Virgin Hair?

Virgin Indian Remy is the most popular type of human hair for extensions. From the businesswoman to the Hollywood star, although very expensive, people are demanding high quality products and are demanding the best possible hair productsand I know my customers want long-lasting gorgeous hair. Indian hair matches hair types from Caucasian to African-American, giving you a more natural look.  Virgin Remy hair has all cuticles intact and unidirectional to prevent tangling.

Possible Damage of Hair Extensions

You can have any method of hair extensions, but most importantly, to keep your own hair from damaging, is proper maintenance and having having your hair extensions in for up to 8 weeks and a maximum of 12 weeks. Shown below is the reason why.

Hair sheds on the average of up to 100 hairs daily. Shedding hair is trapped in the hair extensions. The longer you wait for removal you are at risk.  Remember to brush at least 3x daily to keep shedding down and prevent dreads and matting.

What's the healthiest for your hair?

8-10  WEEKS, time to remove

12 WEEKS, at risk

16 WEEKS OR LONGER, critical, high risks for most

Don't be fooled by other stylists that say it'll last

over 3 months or more. I know the risks!!!
